about
Iris Peretz
In a world that takes itself all too seriously, I offer the viewer an escape and hopefully more than just a moment of happiness. Having grown up deep in the late 60’s and 70’s hippie culture, I tend to incorporate the themes of peace love and rock and roll in my practice. My work strives to embrace spirituality and freedom while offering an escape from a mundane and cynical reality. I gravitate toward abstracted organic shapes that relate and interact as if in a dance. Often this dance depicts iconic symbols in unusual circumstances and turns common items into unexpected relics.
My art focuses on the symbolism and iconography that has profoundly impacted Western culture in the last 6 decades. My intention with every piece is to induce a strong emotional reaction, to set a mood and maybe even spark a memory. I incorporate recognizable images of food, gods, the sea, politics and every day items in my progression of works.
My process is varied and diverse as I try to make and present my work in a timely manner so that it is relevant, relates to current world affairs and has the desired impact while forging a relationship with the viewer. I connect to the viewer by combining recognizable themes in an unconventional fashion. I often use disparate materials, found objects and unusual processes in order to make an impression. I use color and texture in my sculpture and paintings in an effort to share my message and perhaps skew expectations.
